You Are Not Your Feelings: Finding Emotional Maturity

    /

Our culture encourages us to trust our feelings above almost everything else. But what if our feelings aren’t telling us the whole truth? Drawing on Scripture, Viktor Frankl, Arthur C. Brooks and the example of Jesus, this article explores what emotional maturity looks like and why followers of Jesus can acknowledge every feeling honestly without allowing those feelings to become their master.

Why Church Isn’t About You (And Why That’s Good News)

    /

We’ve been taught that church exists to meet our needs. But the Bible paints a different picture. Church exists to shape us into people who love, grow, and live differently together. It’s not about what we get. It’s about who we become—and how that shows the world what God is like.

If hospitality is so important, why are there so many lonely people?

    /

Last week I visited again the Balcombe Beach Retreat (pictured) It is clear that we are called to be hospitable: Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. (Romans 12:13) Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. (Hebrews 13:2) Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.(1 Peter 4:9) In both Timothy and Titus, being hospitable is one of the key qualifications for church leadership. So if hospitality is so important, why are there so many lonely people in our communities and even in our churches? Hospitality requires a fundamental willingness to be…

Forgiveness as a basis for Leadership development

I am enjoying the reading for my Arrow Leadership course. I wrote earlier about my reflections on Bill Hybels’ book “Just walk across the room”, and how I agreed with much of what he was saying but was concerned about the motivation behind evangelism that seems to come through the book. Another book I have just finished is “Growing Leaders” by James Lawrence. Much of the book is written about the practicalities of leadership and I wish I had read it 20 years ago, because a lot of what he is writing about I have had to learn the hard way. There have been a few good moments through the…

    What is Leadership?

    /

Which definition is true? The organisation I work with, Fusion, is in the middle of a healthy identity crisis. For 48 years, my father was the dominant personality as the founder and leader. Last year that changed and we are in the process of coming to terms with a different reality. Part of the challenge facing Fusion is naming what leadership actually is.
