You probably didn’t even notice but I haven’t been doing many reflections lately because I have been pushing to finally finish the book.
We are currently working on the layout and we have a draft of the cover now (pictured), so its all starting to feel a bit more real. I didn’t understand just how much work there would be in getting to this stage!
I had a conversation with a glass artist who is a good friend and as he described the painful process of creating a piece of art from glass, the many different stages where you have to re-do what you think was already done, it sounded very familiar.
I have learned a lot through the process of writing a book. Probably the biggest thing is how much I need fellowship. Time and again I thought I was finished until someone I trusted pointed something out.
Probably my biggest shake up in the process was getting the manuscript back from the editor and realising just how much work still lay ahead of me.
One of the verses I focus on in the book is is Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” I think the process of writing has shown me just how true that Proverb is.
I am so grateful for the people who took the time to read the manuscript and give me constructive feedback. It really feels like the final product will be a community effort. While I really appreciated the generous and positive feedback from numbers of people, it was those who took the time to help me see how I could improve it that helped me the most. The whole process has reinforced for me the vital importance of honest feedback.
I hope to start to write a little more often on the blog now that I am over the big hurdle, although there is still a little way to go before I finally get to hold a copy of the book in my hands and it is available for sale. I am looking forward to be able to focus a little more broadly in the months ahead, and Leeanne and I are still on the journey of exploring what the right next steps might be for us as a family, after last year finishing my leadership role with Fusion Australia.
But for now, I’m just pleased to be at this point! The cover will change a bit still, so given all that have been writing, any feedback would be welcome!
