Structural Grace
Happy New Year
I love this time of year.
It’s a time to stop and breathe, to reflect and to plan.
It’s a time to try to make sense of all that has been and all that will be.
New Year for me is a kind of structural grace. The promise that the past can be over and there is a whole year ahead without any major mistakes, crisis’ or blemishes.
I invariably fail in the attempt to encapsulate the previous year in any kind of framework that captures anywhere near the depth and breadth of it.
I also always fall short of the targets I set myself for this time of year.
I love though that I can do both things, and I do change as a result.
This time last year I set myself a goal of beginning to write, and this year you are reading this on my blog which came into existence during the past year and you are able to purchase my first ever book which was listed on Amazon yesterday.
Other things didn’t happen. I am learning that you never accidentally lose weight. I might actually have to put in some effort on that front this year.
I didn’t formulate goals so much yesterday, as state intentions. I put together a list of things I want to do or do differently.
I wasn’t sure whether to share them with you, but because this blog is about my personal journey I thought I’d take a risk with most of them. There are still a few I will keep to myself.
My hopes for 2011:
- I want a vision that grounds me and drives me. I want a clearer way to differentiate between good things to do and right things to do
- I want to feel more connected with my kids
- I want my friendship with my wife to be stronger
- I want to have more conversations with God
- I want Poatina to thrive this year
- I want Fusion to grow together this year
- I want my kids to have a great education
- I want to love Jesus deeply
- I want to write books that bring people hope. I want my blog to do that too.
- I want to understand why I get driven sometimes and be less driven
- I want to play golf more.
I am living with the idea of formulating goals that are more measurable, but these (and the others I didn’t share) are a good start.
What do you want 2011 to be for you?
Isn’t it nice to feel like you can make a fresh start!
Hey Matt
Congrats on the book mate. Looking forward to hearing more of your reflections… I seem to have dropped off the list. Will send my email through again. Be great to catch up and hear how you are going. Bless ya
