The grass is very green
Making the choice to play
I am sitting in my rather warm office/shed as the sun streams through the huge window that overlooks my backyard.
Today I mowed our backyard.
Now that’s really not that big a deal, in fact at the moment it seems to need to be mown every 7 days!
It’s just that when I mowed it, I took a little extra time when I finished to mow in a practise cricket pitch.
As I survey the backyard I am pleased with my handiwork.
Sure I could have used the catcher on the outfield and it would have been a bit neater….
Sure there are holes all over the infield where our Staffordshire Bull Terrier has been burying her bones….
Sure the pitch is a bit uneven and has some brown patches where I needed to transfer dirt from one of our garden beds to fix a few holes….
But the Garvin cricket ground (the G.C.G. ?) has had its first match and Josh scored the first half century.
Unfortunately Bella (our Staffie) started to get in on the action so the game slowed whenever the ball went near.
Finally I rolled my ankle in one of the many holes in the outfield and we called stumps.
Sometimes I feel like I should have something profound to say, some great truth to expound, but today it felt like the ordinary was the important thing.
I came across a quote from Abraham Maslow:
The great lesson is that the sacred is in the ordinary, that it is to be found in one’s daily life, in one’s neighbors, friends, and family, in one’s backyard.
It’s so true.
I know a trap for me is that I can be so caught up with “important things” that I miss out on life.
I have always been challenged by John Lennon’s lyric:
Life is what happens to you
While you’re busy making other plans
Today I’m pleased I made the choice to mow a cricket pitch and play cricket rather than make other plans.
be found in one’s daily life, in one’s neighbors, friends, and
family, in one’s backyard.
– Abraham Maslow
